Taboola

Send Taboola Pixel events and purchase conversions from your NEXT storefront

Taboola is a native advertising network. The Taboola Pixel Events app loads the Taboola Pixel on your storefront and sends page view, product, cart, checkout and purchase events to your Taboola account, so Taboola can attribute conversions and revenue to your campaigns. The app sends these events through Storefront Event Tracking, so you don't need to edit your theme.

Taboola Pixel Events is an installable App. Enable it from the Apps menu on your store.

Set Up Taboola

You need the numeric Account ID from your Taboola advertiser account, Realize:

  1. Sign in to Realize and select your advertiser account.
  2. Select Tracking in the left menu.
  3. Copy the numeric Account ID shown at the top left, for example 1234567.

In your store, navigate to Apps, install Taboola Pixel Events, and open its settings:

  • Taboola Account ID (required): the numeric Account ID from Realize. The app sends nothing until a numeric ID is saved. Your account name, or a pasted pixel snippet, will not work.
  • Skip Test Orders: don't send purchase events for Test Orders. Off by default.

Select Save.

The app loads the Taboola Pixel for you. If your theme also has Taboola's base pixel code pasted in, remove it, or every page view will be counted twice.

Define Conversions in Taboola

Taboola only reports an event as a conversion once you define a conversion for it. In Realize, go to Tracking > Conversions > New Conversion, choose Create conversions using code, set the type to Event, and enter the event name exactly as shown below.

Event nameTaboola categorySent when
view_contentView ContentA customer views a product page
add_to_cartAdd to CartA product is added to the cart
start_checkoutStart CheckoutCheckout starts
make_purchaseMake PurchaseAn order is completed

page_view is sent on every storefront page as Taboola's base pixel event, so it doesn't need a conversion.

Events that arrive before a conversion is defined show in the Active Events tab as No Conversion Defined, where you can select Set as conversion. A new conversion can take up to an hour to show activity.

Event Values

The app sends Taboola's standard event parameters:

  • revenue: on make_purchase, the order's item revenue excluding tax and shipping. On start_checkout, the cart's item revenue excluding tax and shipping. On add_to_cart, the line total. On view_content, the product price.
  • currency: the store currency of the cart or order.
  • quantity: the number of units.
  • orderid: the order number, on make_purchase only.

Upsell items added to an order are included in that order's make_purchase revenue. The storefront sends one purchase event per order.

Verify Taboola Tracking

  1. Open your storefront in Chrome with the Taboola Pixel Helper extension installed.
  2. View a product, add it to the cart, and complete a test order.
  3. Confirm that the extension shows page_view, view_content, add_to_cart, start_checkout and make_purchase with your Account ID.

In Realize, the Test Events tab under Tracking > Conversions opens your site with a test click. The Conversions table shows each conversion's status and when it was last received.

Turn off Skip Test Orders while you test, or the test order's make_purchase event won't be sent.

Taboola adds a tblci click ID parameter to ad links. Keep it on links to your storefront, and don't strip it in redirects, so Taboola can attribute conversions.

Use Taboola with Campaigns

The Taboola Pixel Events app only tracks your storefront. Campaign funnels built from the campaign starter templates load the Taboola Pixel themselves when the campaign's taboola_account_id is set. They send the same event names, plus:

  • add_payment_info when payment details are entered
  • upsell_purchase for each accepted post-purchase upsell, separate from make_purchase

If you run both on the same Taboola account, also define conversions for upsell_purchase (under Make Purchase) and add_payment_info (under Add Payment Info) so upsell revenue is counted. See the Campaign analytics developer guides for campaign setup.
